Beloved, there is immense value in discovering your personal Feng Shui element, and learning how to calculate your Kua number is a foundational first step. This knowledge allows you to consciously bring elements into your environment that will equip you to thrive and to position yourself in directions that improve the flow of energy in your life. This journey of self-discovery will serve you in creating a more harmonious and peaceful existence.
One of the most foundational tools in Classical Feng Shui for understanding your personal energy is the Kua number. This guide will teach you how to calculate your Kua (or Trigram) number to unlock your core element, essence colors, and personal best directions.
Understanding Your Kua Number, Element, and Essence Colors
Your Kua number is calculated from your birth year and gender, and it reveals your energetic blueprint. From this, we can determine your core element and your essence colors—the specific hues that feed your spirit and improve your overall energy. You should aim to integrate these colors into your life, especially for items that touch your body, such as clothing and bedsheets.
For example, if your Kua number is 9, your element is Fire. The element that feeds Fire is Wood. Therefore, incorporating your essence colors of red and purple (Fire), along with the colors and materials of the Wood element (greens, plants), will help support and nourish you.
Calculating Your Kua (Trigram) Number
To Calculate for a Male:
- Subtract 1 from the birth year if born between January 1st and February 5th.
- Add all the digits of your birth year until it reduces to a single number.
- Subtract this single number from 11. The result is your Kua number.
- If the final result is 5, your Kua number becomes 2.
Example: A man born on Jan 23, 1978, would use 1977. (1+9+7+7=24 -> 2+4=6). Then, 11-6=5. Since the result is 5, the Kua number becomes 2.
To Calculate for a Female:
- Steps one and two are the same as above.
- Add 4 to the single number from step two. If the result is a two-digit number, add those digits together to get a single number.
- The result is your Kua number.
- If the final result is 5, your Kua number becomes 8.
Example: A woman born on Jan 23, 1978, would use 1977. (1+9+7+7=24 -> 2+4=6). Then, 6+4=10 -> 1+0=1. The Kua number is 1.
